Keeping pace with the cyclists as they complete stages 11-15, we will taste through the regions of Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, and Piemonte!
Considered the most famous region in all of Italy is Tuscany; the birth place of the Italian language and renowned for their internationally recognized wines. Tuscany has secured its place in the wine world not only through international recognition but also for its iconic wines Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino! Both of these wines are made with Tuscany’s most popular grape varietal, Sangiovese. And to go along with Tuscany’s many claims to fame, not many wine regions can say they have created “cult wines” also known as “Super Tuscans”; wines of extremely high quality! If you are a wine lover then Tuscany is definitely the place to go.
Emilia Romagna is one of Italy’s oldest wine regions, dating all the way back to the 7th century BC. One of the most distinguishing factors that differentiates Emilia Romagna from all the other regions in Italy is it is home to numerous diverse climates and soils. This results in producing many unique wines and also allows foreign grape varietals to thrive in this area. What Emilia Romagna is best known for though is Lambrusco; a bubbly delicate red wine. If you are in the mood for a sip of some bubbly than Emilia Romagna is the place to go, being a huge producer and exporter of sparkling wines.
Piemonte, known as the Burgundy of Italy, is the second most famous region right after Tuscany and is home to 1/3 of the population of Italy. Its name, ‘Piemonte’, literally means “the foot of the mountains” and is known for having the ideal climate for viniculture. The primary grape varietals in this region are Barbera, Moscato, and Nebbiolo. Piemonte is also home to the most DOCG wines, which is the highest classification Italian wine can receive!
